Helping Diaspora Transform User Engagement

Diaspora

Live

Overview

Diaspora is a social platform built to connect immigrants with community, opportunity, and support. While the mission was powerful, the original WordPress site—built with the Astra theme—fell short in clarity and engagement. I was brought in to redesign the entire experience, working strictly within the limits of the existing theme. No new layouts, no custom templates—just smart design decisions to turn a rigid framework into a credible, conversion-ready platform.

The Problem

Diaspora is a social platform designed to help immigrants around the world find community, opportunity, and connection. The website is their front door — the first impression for users, investors, and future partners.

But there was a problem.

The original website, built with WordPress and the Astra theme, looked and felt like a generic placeholder. Content was scattered. The visual hierarchy was weak. The messaging lacked clarity. Pages felt templated and impersonal. Despite being functional, it didn’t reflect the energy or ambition of what Diaspora was building.

It was hurting credibility.

Feedback from early users and partners echoed this: “I thought this was just a blog.” “Where do I sign up?” “This doesn’t feel like a real product yet.”

Despite the clear need for a redesign, I was given a tough constraint: I couldn’t change the WordPress theme or its structure. No new plugins, no new layout templates. I had to work within Astra’s sandbox and still deliver a fresh, credible, and engaging website.

Approach

Since I couldn’t change the theme or core structure, I focused on content flow, clarity, layout hacks, and visual storytelling.

Here’s how I approached it:

  • Content-first audit: I reviewed every page, noting where content felt misplaced, unclear, or redundant. The goal was to tighten the message and guide users through the site with purpose.

  • Visual restructuring: I used Astra’s default block components in new ways — repurposing sections, stacking layouts creatively, and leveraging spacing and color hierarchy to create visual depth.

  • Style tuning: I worked within Astra’s limited style settings to introduce a consistent font hierarchy, soft color transitions, and minimal iconography that added polish without introducing custom code.

  • Call-to-action optimization: CTAs were buried or inconsistent across pages. I standardized them, clarified their intent, and placed them where users actually expected to take action.

Challenges

Working within Astra’s rigid template was like trying to redesign a house without touching the walls.

  • Layout restrictions: Astra’s sections had limited nesting, padding, and breakpoint behavior. Getting layouts to look balanced across screen sizes without breaking the theme was trial and error.

  • Style overrides: Every small adjustment—font size, spacing, alignment—had to be done using the limited WordPress block editor settings, sometimes requiring micro CSS tweaks inserted through the Customizer.

  • Visual fatigue: The theme reused a lot of design patterns. Making pages feel fresh without changing structure forced me to rethink how content was introduced — sequencing, spacing, and interaction had to do the heavy lifting.

Solution

Despite the limitations, I delivered a cleaner, smarter, and more human redesign — without touching the theme.

Key improvements:

  • Homepage revamp: Transformed the homepage from a flat scroll to a guided introduction — focusing on who Diaspora is for, what it does, and how to join.

  • Clear navigation: Simplified the nav menu, grouping related items and adding microcopy where needed to clarify each section’s purpose.

  • Consistent CTAs: Introduced uniform call-to-actions across the site to guide user flow — “Join Diaspora,” “Explore Communities,” “Start a Fundraiser.”

  • About & mission clarity: Rewrote and redesigned the About section to tell a clear story of Diaspora’s purpose, values, and product pillars.

  • Mobile polish: Rebalanced layouts for mobile to avoid cramped sections, redundant text, and unreadable fonts.

Results & Impact

Here’s what changed after the redesign:

  • Time on site increased by ~2.4x — users stayed longer, engaged more

  • Bounce rate dropped by 37%, particularly on the homepage and About section

  • Sign-up intent improved, with more users reaching the CTA sections organically

  • The founder reported an uptick in investor interest, citing the improved website as a “credible representation” of the brand

It no longer felt like a placeholder. It felt like a company.

“The redesign made us look like we mean business — and we do.”
— Founder, Diaspora

Next Steps

With the foundation solid, there are still opportunities to evolve:

  • Introduce custom-designed assets: Icons, illustrations, and videos that reflect Diaspora’s unique tone and mission

  • Improve site performance: The current setup has heavy plugins — optimizing images and scripts will improve load speed

  • Design a modular CMS: Eventually replacing theme blocks with a custom layout system will offer better flexibility and control as the product grows

But for now, I’ve helped Diaspora turn a rigid theme into a living, breathing brand experience — one that actually reflects the community it’s building.
